DUKE COUNTED OUT AFTER BRAWL

There was so much confusion surrounding a fourth-quarter brawl Saturday at Scott Stadium that Duke coach Barry Wilson didn't even know who was ejected.

The Blue Devils, 35-0 losers to Virginia, were assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty when T.C. White returned to the game after being ejected for fighting.

"Believe me, I didn't know that," Wilson said. "Obviously, there was a great deal of confusion."

Kevin Brooks, the game's leading rusher, and reserve defensive back Joe Williams were thrown out of the game for Virginia. White and reserve running back Johannes Brugger were dismissed for Duke.

Williams and Brugger are both candidates to be redshirted, meaning they have been ejected from a college game before playing in one.

"If you had thrown everybody out who was involved in the fight, you would have had about three people left for each team," said UVa defensive tackle Mark Krichbaum.

"They [the Blue Devils] were the ones who left the bench. In my opinion, they were the ones who should have gotten the stiffer penalties, not us."

There was a 15-yard walk-off against Virginia as a result of the original unsportsmanlike penalty, called against quarterback Symmion Willis for taunting following a tackle on an interception.

UVa coach George Welsh had an extended conversation with Wilson after they shook hands at the game's conclusion, and they seemed to agree that the series has become needlessly nasty.

"I don't know what happened on Virginia's sideline," Wilson said. "I couldn't see it. I don't think George saw it.

"So much of that is just a show of macho and it just turns me off. I want to see results on the field and to heck with all this baloney on the side and between whistles. It's just for show and it occurs on both sides."
