TRIPS ON N&W'S 611 COMING IN OCTOBER

The Roanoke Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society will sponsor three train excursions aboard the Norfolk & Western Railway Class J, Number 611 steam train during the Roanoke Railway Festival on Oct. 9-10.

The trips will depart from the lower level of the former Norfolk & Western passenger station on Shenandoah Avenue in Roanoke.

On Oct. 9, the 611 will power two excursions from Roanoke to Walton in the New River Valley. The morning trip will depart at 8:30 a.m. and return at 12:30 p.m. The afternoon trip leaves at 2 and returns at 6. Fares for either of the trips are $42 for adults and $33 for children under 12. An all-day package for both trips is $69 and $55.

On Oct. 10, the 611 will pull a round trip excursion to Bluefield, W.Va. The train will leave at 7:30 a.m. and return to Roanoke at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for this trip are $74 for adults and $54 for children 12 and under.

All three trips feature seating aboard open window and air conditioned coaches, food service, and souvenir cars. Photo stops are planned for each trip.
