Wilder, who spent much of last week promoting Southern trade with African nations during the Southern Governors Association meeting, has planned a 19-day schedule including stops in Germany, Russia, Japan, China, Hong Kong and South Korea.
In all, he will board a dozen flights and ride three trains, touching down for business discussions in Bonn, Moscow, Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Seoul.
Wilder chose to keep Moscow on his itinerary after being assured last week that he could conduct business and government meetings despite a standoff there between President Boris Yeltsin and his hard-line opponents.
Eugene P. Trani, president of Virginia Commonwealth University and a Russia specialist, and other university officials coordinated the visit to Russia, which is scheduled Thursday to Sunday.
The trade mission is the sixth of Wilder's term and the second time he has been to Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea. The Moscow trip apparently is his first.
