OBIT SPURGEON, JOSEPH LAWRENCE

SPURGEON, Joseph Lawrence, 81, of Chilhowie, died Saturday, September 25, 1993, in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion. He was a native of Tazewell County. He was a retired employee of the Smyth Farm Bureau, Chilhowie, with 60 years of service, serving as manager for 51 of those years before his retirement in 1982. He was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sharon Davis. Survivors include his wife, Neoma Rector Spurgeon; two daughters, Jo Ann Davis of Holiday, Fla. and Betty June Holloman of Vienna; four grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Saint James Cemetery, Chilhowie, with the Rev. Thomas B. Sullivan Jr. officiating. Interment will follow. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m Monday at Williams Funeral Home.
