THE UNIVERSITY CLUB: SCHOLARLY, NOT SNOOTY

The University Club, which is sponsoring an auction Sunday to benefit its building fund, has been misunderstood for far too long, said Kathleen Harshberger, the club's executive director.

"We're not a bunch of snoots," she said with a laugh.

The University Club auction is a perfect opportunity for members of the public who are not affiliated with the club to find out what it's all about, Harshberger said.

"We're simply a scholarly social center," she said, adding that the private club is attached to, but not a part of, Virginia Tech.

The club sponsors a number of social events and brings in visiting artists from different fields every year. Harshberger said the club's unique

perspective will be reflected by the auction, which is being held to raise money for renovations to the University Club building.

Auction-goers will be able to take advantage of items and services they may not have had a chance to get elsewhere.

In addition to crafts, antiques and other collectibles, the auction will include original art, tax-consulting and legal services, gourmet dinners, entertainment, and a custom glass centerpiece created by Tech glass-blower Frans Van Damme.

The auction, which is free to the public, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the University Club building at 100 Otey St. in Blacksburg. For more information, call the club at 231-3870.
