GAY SAILOR ASKS JUDGE TO KEEP HIM IN NAVY

With only three days left before President Clinton's new policy on homosexuals in the military takes effect, a gay lieutenant asked a federal judge Monday to stop his imminent separation from the Navy.

"A man is about to lose his career," said the lawyer for Lt. (j.g.) Richard Dirk Selland, a Norfolk, Va., sailor who is scheduled to be placed on inactive reserve Sept. 30.

The action would stop his pay and benefits and, he contends, effectively end his Navy career. - Associated Press
