U.S. coal production up 11% in one week

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Domestic coal production totaled 19.4 million tons during the week ending Sept. 18, up 11 percent from the 17.5 million tons produced the previous week, the U.S. Department of Energy reported Monday.

The U.S. coal industry produced 19.8 million tons in the same week last year, according to the department's Energy Information Administration. Domestic coal production so far this year is about 4.8 percent behind last year's production at this time.

Powell Pharmacy Inc. of Salem said it will expand its store at 201 E. Main St. to assume space being vacated by the Ben Franklin store. Ben Franklin is to close at the end of the year and the pharmacy will move into it early next year.

A.W. "Skip" Brown has opened an office of Edward D. Jones & Co. at 2115 Crystal Spring Ave., Roanoke. It is the second area office of the St. Louis-based investment and financial services company.

Aerial Machine & Tool Corp. in Vesta has been named a Blue Ribbon Contractor by the U.S. Air Force, citing the company's on-time delivery of quality products.
