ARTS AND CRAFTS FAIR FEATURES 50 BOOTHS

The 15th annual SENIOR ART AND CRAFTS FAIR is Friday and Saturday at the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, Christiansburg. Friday hours are 5-9 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Sponsored by the Christiansburg Senior Center, this fair will feature more than 50 booths full of crafts handmade by area seniors.

Lunch and homemade goodies will be on sale Saturday by the Montgomery County Senior Athletes. They'll also be glad to take a donation on a handmade quilt they plan to give away. Donations are $1.

Door prizes will be given away every half-hour on Saturday.

WKEX 1430-AM will broadcast live from the fair starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

The New River Valley SENIOR CITIZENS' DINNER-DANCE will be held Saturday at Hidden Hills Country Club, Radford Road. A covered-dish dinner will begin at 7 p.m. and the dance will be 9 p.m.-1 a.m. The Good Time Express will provide the music.

\ WARM HEARTH VILLAGE will hold a "town meeting" Monday, 7 p.m., at Karr Activity Center for village residents to meet Virginia House of Delegates candidates. On hand will be Democrat Jim Shuler and Republican Nick Rush. Both candidates will present their views on senior and health-care issues.

This sessions is open only to village residents.

The VIRGINIA CENTER FOR ACTIVE RETIREMENT will present "Why Do People Volunteer?" Wednesday, 9-11 a.m., in conference room F of the Donaldson Brown Center at Virginia Tech.

The Virginia Center for Active Retirement offers continuing education and information on services and volunteer opportunities for retirees.

Among the TRIPS FOR SENIORS on this week's calendar:

Radford Senior Center, 27 First St., 731-3634. Friday: Mercer Mall, W.Va. Transportation costs $2 and leaves the center at 9:15 a.m. Lunch is on your own at K&W Cafeteria.

Oct. 8: Van trip to Mabry Mill and outlet stores leaves the center at 9:15 a.m. Lunch will be on your own at the Mabry Mill restaurant. Then, free time at the outlets. The fee is $2.

All trips are first-come, first-served. The center also has itineraries and information on Road Runner Trips with All America Tours Inc. Ahead are trips to Wheeling, W.Va.; Steubenville, Ohio; and Opryland.

Pulaski Senior Center, 106 N. Washington Ave., 980-1000. Today: A "mystery trip" will leave the center at 9 a.m. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and don't forget your lunch money. The cost is $5 for transportation.

Christiansburg Senior Center, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173. Oct. 8: Sandstone Falls, Hinton, W.Va. Transportation is $4 and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 8 a.m.

Oct. 9: Newbern Fall Festival Days, Transportation costs $4 and leaves the armory at 8:30 a.m.

At the CHRISTIANSBURG SENIOR CENTER, 655 Montgomery St., 382-8173:

Tune in Monday for the Senior Outlook program on WKEX 1430-AM. Bob Smith visits on-air with center director Sherry Kostric.

Stop by for coffee hour Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., followed by a gospel sing at 11.

Enjoy the line dancing classes starting Tuesday, 11 a.m., at the armory. The class costs $8 and runs for eight weeks.

A free blood-pressure screening is set for Wednesday, 10-11 a.m.

The Senior Choir meets Thursdays, 1:30 p.m. New voices are welcome.

A nondenominational Bible study meets Thursdays, 10:15-10:45 a.m.

Senior aerobics each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8-9 a.m., at the armory. The less-strenuous "Easy Motions" meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m., at the armory. Both classes are free.

At the RADFORD SENIOR CENTER 27 First St., 731-3634:

Play canasta Mondays at 12:30 p.m.

The walking group meets in the Radford Recreation gym Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. Wear comfortable tennis shoes. There's no fee.

The ceramics class meets Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Bring a sandwich for lunch. The fee is $2 plus the cost of your ceramic item.

The quilting group meets Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Newcomers and beginners are welcome.

The creative-writing class meet s Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

At the PULASKI SENIOR CENTER, 106 N. Washington Ave., 980-1000:

The Count Pulaskifest is Saturday, and the RSVP booth will sell baked goods and popcorn. The organization seeks donations of baked goods and volunteers to help work the booth.

Coffee hour is Thursdays, 9:30 a.m.

Cards are Fridays, 1-4 p.m., and ceramics Mondays, 1-3 p.m.

Christiansburg Presbyterian Church will sponsor a\ RETIREMENT FAIR, Oct. 10, 2-4 p.m. at the church, 107 W. Main St. Representatives of several agencies will speak on issues related to retirement planning. Light refreshments will be served.

The session is open to prospective retirees or their relatives.

The annual meeting of the New River Valley chapter of the\ NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED FEDERAL EMPLOYEES will be held at noon, Oct. 14, at Stone's Cafeteria in Christiansburg. Dr. Shirley Travis of the Virginia Tech department of family and child development will speak on developments in Alzheimer's Disease research and about the newly-opened Adult Care Center at Virginia Tech.

The Montgomery County Health Department will offer\ FREE FLU SHOTS to seniors with Medicare cards Monday, Oct. 18., 9 a.m.-4 p.m., at the Christiansburg Senior Center. The shots are $10 for those without a Medicare card.

A meeting to organize a New River Valley chapter of\ CATHOLIC GOLDEN AGE will be held Oct. 20, 7:30 p.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 706 Harding Ave.

\ NANCY GLISSON, MISS VIRGINIA 1993, will be on hand for a second grand opening celebration at the Virginia Tech Adult Day Care Center in late October for family caregivers and professionals. The "open house" will be Oct. 28, 2-3:30 p.m. at the center, 102 Wallace Hall on the Tech campus.

A tour, a slide show, service information and refreshments will be provided.

A Tech graduate and fourth runner-up in the recent Miss America pageant, Glisson, an advocate for the elderly, was a volunteer at the center. During her reign as Miss Virginia, she has made promotion of adult day-care centers a focal point.
