RIEGLE TO RETIRE FROM SENATE

U.S. Sen. Donald Riegle, D-Mich., scarred by involvement in the Keating Five scandal and facing a tough re-election fight, stunned his colleagues Tuesday by announcing that he would retire rather than face the voters again in 1994.

In his unexpected farewell address, Riegle said he wanted to spend more time with his family and did not mention his intervention with federal regulators on behalf of savings and loan executive Charles Keating.

He was the sixth member of the Senate this year to announce that he would not seek re-election next year. Three of them are linked to the Keating investigation. - Los Angeles Times
