PULASKI SUPERVISORS OKS ROAD-IMPROVEMENT PLAN

The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors approved a six-year road improvement plan giving priorities to road projects throughout the county.

The cost of county-wide rural additions under the plan is estimated at $445,300.

The top county 10 projects, in order, include work on Lowe's Ferry Road (Virginia 697), Thornspring Road (639), Channel Road (656), Highland Road (627), Mines Road (711), Simpkinstown Road (665), Lead Mine Road (693, financed 50-50 with Montgomery County), Barnett Ridge Road (652), Eugene Street (618) and Mann's Drive (642) in conjunction with work on Church Street (676) and Falling Branch Road (798).

The Town of Dublin has asked the county to include its priorities for the next two years as part of the county's six-year improvement program. Resident Transportation Engineer J.D. Brugh estimated would the cost would total $60,000 for two years.

For the first year, Dublin seeks repaving of sections of Darst, Locust, Dunbar, Walker, Dunlap, Zeigler, Oakwood and Linkous Avenues. For the second year, it wants parts of Jordan, South 6th, 5th and 4th Streets repaved.

In other business, the board accepted a $2,272,000 contract with Avis Construction Co. of Roanoke for expansion of the county's brick courthouse. Courts are being held in a rented building on Virginia 99 (East Main Street) in Pulaski while work on the brick courthouse is underway.

The supervisors appointed Dr. William Dawson as the county representative to the Agency on Aging, reappointed Assistant County Administrator Peter Huber to the Private Industry Council and Extension Agent Richard White to the Southwest Virginia Farmers Market Advisory Council and, subject to their acceptance, named John Bolen to the Board of Zoning Appeals and Lloyd Matthews to the Historic Ingles Ferry Restoration Committee.

The Ingles Ferry committee is seeking grants to re-establish the Ingles Ferry which existed hundreds of years ago. Other representatives will be from the city of Radford, Ingles farm property owners on both sides of New River and two other members.

Mayor Tom Starnes has been chosen as the Radford representative.
