STAUNTON RIVER DOWNS LIBERTY

Kim English grabbed nine rebounds and sank eight of 10 free throws in the second half to lead Staunton River as the Golden Eagles defeated Liberty 60-48 in a Seminole District girls' basketball game Tuesday night.

Staunton River (6-1 overall, 6-1 district) led 27-24 at halftime and outscored the Minettes 33-24 in the second half.

Tanya Nelms led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and Deena Mitchell chipped in 13.

Sue Linn Cowlbeck scored 17 points and JoAnn Harris had 12 for Liberty (5-3, 5-3). \

Galax 51

GALAX - The Galax press created numerous easy baskets in the first half and the Maron Tide went on to the Mountain Empire District victory.

Tammy Cox had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jaclyn Dickens added 13 points, 15 rebounds and six assists for Galax (5-3, 5-2). Giles' record fell to 1-7 overall, 1-6 in the district. \

ROCKY GAP - Nancy Tupper scored 25 points and sparked a big second-half rally that carried the Eagles past the Green Wave in the Mountain Empire District.

Tupper, who sat out most of the first half with foul trouble, scored the first 10 points of the second half as Rocky Gap (5-2, 5-2) rallied from a seven-point deficit.

Freshman Amanda Clark had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Christie Whitt added 11 points - including two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Melinda Fleeman had 17 points to lead Narrows (2-5, 2-5). \

Shawsville 42

FLOYD - The Buffaloes doubled the score on Shawsville in the first quarter and rolled to the Mountain Empire District victory.

Floyd County (11-1, 9-0) got 14 points from Lynette Nolley and 13 each from Leigh-Ann Pursifull and Carrie Shaffin. \

Christiansburg 46

TAZEWELL - The Blue Demons trailed by only one point going to the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs opened an eight-point lead and then hit their free throws to seal the non-district victory.

Shonda Wilson scored 20 points and Star Anderson added 14 for Tazewell.

Rebecca McNeil had a game-high 30 points for Christiansburg (2-5) and Maureen Jackson scored 11. \
