JAMES RIVER OVERPOWERS BATH COUNTY

Six of seven James River players scored as the Knights coasted to a 71-25 Pioneer District victory over Bath County on Tuesday night in Buchanan.

Angie Johnson and Teresa Hickman scored 21 points each and Cara Mundy chipped in 17 for James River (3-5 overall, 2-0 in the district).

With 13 points, Melanie Woods was the lone double-digit scorer for the Chargers (3-5, 0-3). \

In other sports in the region:

Mark Baldwin shot an 8-over-par 79 to lead Patrick Henry, but Cave Spring was three shots better as the Knights won the Roanoke Valley District regular-season golf championship at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Cave Spring finished at 330. The Patriots scored 333, followed by Franklin County (341), Pulaski County (350) and William Fleming (445).

By winning the tournament, the Knights earned an automatic berth in the Northwest Region championships Oct. 13 in Winchester. A postseason tournament will be held Thursday at Water's Edge to determine which team advances with Cave Spring.

Baldwin qualified for the championships by finishing the season at 389. Other qualifiers were Cave Spring's Doug Kenney (399), Patrick Henry's Saunders Wilhelm (401) and Franklin County's Keith Mattson (402).

Josh MacDermod and Richard Booth scored two goals each as Roanoke Valley Christian blanked Lynchburg Christian 4-0 in boys' soccer.

MacDermod also had an assist for the Eagles (4-0-1 overall, 3-0-0 in the conference). Lynchburg Christian is O-6-1, 0-4-0.
