OBIT KIRKLAND, CLAUD KNIGHT

KIRKLAND, Claud Knight, 78, of 1400 English Forest Rd., Pulaski, died Monday, September 27, 1993, in the Pulaski Community Hospital. He was born January 11, 1915, in South Hampton County, and he was the son of the late John Edward Kirkland and Sally Estelle Knight Kirkland. Mr. Kirkland attended Capron High School and graduated from VPI in 1936 with a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He joined Appalachian Power Co. as a Rural Service Engineer on January 1, 1937, in Pulaski. From 1942 to 1945 he was on leave of absence while serving in the United States Army Signal Corp. as an instructor in electronics and radar distribution. In 1967, Mr. Kirkland became the Division Manager for Appalachian Power Co. in Pulaski. In December 1979, he retired from Appalachian Power Company, Pulaski. He was past president of the Pulaski Rotary Club, past president of the Pulaski Chamber of Commerce, a member of the original Board of Directors at the New River Community College, Dublin, and a member of the New River Educational Foundation. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski. Mr. Kirkland was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Riggle Kirkland. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Collins Kirkland, Pulaski; two sons, William C. Kirkland, Toledo, Ohio, W. Pat Kirkland, Pulaski; one stepson, James S. Phipps, Wytheville; nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., from the First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, with the Rev. Jack Weikel and the Rev. Ty Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, Dublin. Visiting will be Wednesday evening at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. The family wishes that memorials be made to the charity of one's choice.
