LIPS ZIPPED ON NS ROLE

Norfolk Southern Corp.'s railroad track serves the Vance, Ala., site where Mercedes-Benz is expected to build its $300 million sport utility vehicle assembly plant.

But the railroad declined to comment on the auto plant's impact on its business until after Mercedes' formal announcement this morning.

NS, which was reported to have been actively involved in procuring options on land that Mercedes was considering near Mebane, N.C., also declined to comment on its involvement with the Alabama site.
