FIRE CUTS POFF BUILDING POWER

Federal employees at Roanoke's Poff Building got an unexpected holiday Wednesday when a fire knocked out the building's electricity.

Roanoke firefighters were called to the facility by a 4:45 a.m. alarm.

The fire actually was in a small building adjacent to the 13-story structure, which houses the federal courts, prosecutors, law enforcement officials, Social Security offices and the administrative offices of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Some downtown mail delivery was canceled because the post office on the first floor of the building also was closed.

Roanoke Fire Capt. R.B. Sarver said that some fire and smoke was visible when firefighters arrived. The fire, which was under control within an hour, was being blamed on an electrical short.
