CITADEL CADETS ASK TO JOIN LAWSUIT

Nine Citadel cadets asked a federal judge Wednesday for permission to become defendants in a lawsuit challenging the all-male admissions policy at the military college.

The motion, filed in the case before U.S. District Judge C. Weston Houck, said if Shannon Faulkner wins her suit, it would have "a serious and irreparable impact" on the cadets' education.

Allowing the cadets to become defendants would broaden the issues to include the effect admitting women would have on the 2,000 students in the corps, the motion said.

The college, its governing board and the state already are defendants. - Associated Press
