GROUND BROKEN FOR 1ST PRIVATELY BUILT TOLL ROAD

Officials broke ground Wednesday for the first privately financed toll road in Virginia in 150 years, a 15-mile highway that will link Dulles International Airport and Leesburg.

The $326 million "Dulles Greenway" is scheduled to be completed in 1996.

The project will be the nation's longest privately built and operated toll highway.

When completed, the four-lane highway will have seven toll facilities, with the one-way toll for the entire road costing $1.75.

The highway was authorized in 1988 by the General Assembly. After the 42-year franchise expires, the road will be returned to state ownership.
