RELIGION BRIEFS

GRANDIN COURT BAPTIST CHURCH has chosen the Rev. Philip E. Motley as its next pastor. Now pastor of Boykins Baptist Church in the Southhampton County town, Motley will succeed the Rev. Robert M. Hamner, who retired 14 months ago after a ministry of more than 30 years. Motley is expected to begin his work in November.

\ CAVE SPRING UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 4505 Hazel Drive S.W., is preparing to reopen its Saturday morning enrichment program for mentally disabled persons. Church volunteers provide outings, crafts classes and refreshments as a ministry of the parish twice a month on Saturday mornings. Call 989-3554 for more information.

\ FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH in downtown Roanoke will send a 16-member team to Chiclayo, Peru, Nov. 4-14 as short-term mission volunteers.\ The Rev. Charles Ward, minister of discipleship, will lead the team. Team members, primarily medical professionals, will work in two hospitals, conduct a clinic in a Baptist church and train Peruvian nationals in basic medical care.

\ OAK GROVE CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 2138 McVitty Road S.W., will be among many congregations of that denomination where the traditional Love Feast and Foot Washing ceremony will be conducted Sunday, World Communion Day. The Brethren follow the practice of Jesus as described in the Bible with men and women washing the feet of others of their own sex as a symbol of humility.

\ FOOD FOR THE POOR, an international agency supported by many churches to ship food, medical and building supplies to impoverished nations, will send its representative, the Rev. James L. Foster, to Cave Spring United Methodist Church on Oct. 17. Foster will speak at the 8:45 and 11 a.m. services, at the 9:45 a.m. education time and at a luncheon and prayer worship at noon. Food for the Poor is based in Deerfield Beach, Fla.

\ AN INTRODUCTION TO ISLAM is the theme of a class scheduled Wednesday and Oct. 13 in the library of St. John's Episcopal Church, South Jefferson Street at Elm Avenue in downtown Roanoke. The Rev. Kirk Ballin, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, will teach the class, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes video and discussion.

\ NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 4229 Welcome Valley Road S.W., will begin a series of classes for youth and adults that continue through Nov. 28 on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. The classes include "Anchoring to the Cross," "Why I Believe the Bible is True," "Living Without Fear" and "Christian Parenting." \ RESTORING POCAHONTAS ISLAND, a part of historic Petersburg that was heavily damaged in a summer tornado, is a goal of a disaster response team sponsored by the Virlina District of the Church of the Brethren. Volunteers are being sought to work the weeks of Oct. 11 and Oct. 25. Call the Rev. Glenn Kinsel, coordinator, 366-9280, for more information.

\ BISHOP RUSSELL INSTITUTE, a program of adult education with a Roman Catholic perspective, will continue three classes through mid-November.

"Understanding the New Testament" is being taught at St. Gerard's Church on Monday nights. "Discovering the Lord: A Spirituality for All Seasons" is being held at Our Lady of Nazareth Church on Monday nights and at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Salem on Tuesday nights.

All are in session from 7:30 to 9:30 and are taught by the Rev. John Boddie and Sister Eveline Murray and Kate Gernhardt. Call 387-0491 for more information.

\ HOLLINS COLLEGE has received a set of new hymnals as a gift from the class of 1993. "New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools" will be dedicated Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the service in Du Pont Chapel with the Rev. Jan Fuller-Carruthers, chaplain, officiating. Several hymns from the new book will be sung by the college choir directed by James Leland.
