RELIGION BRIEFS

A JOINT REVIVAL MEETING continues through Friday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 102 S. Market St. in Salem. Shiloh is sponsoring the meeting with the nearby First Baptist Church. The Rev. David Keaton of Reed Street Baptist Church in Vinton is the evangelist. Worship begins at 8 p.m.

\ FIRST CHURCH OF GOD of Salem has for the fifth time in seven years received recognition for its growth in Sunday school enrollment from its national headquarters in Anderson, Ind., An increase of 20 percent was recorded last year by the church at 2241 Mill Lane.

\ A PIPE ORGAN, used for nearly 65 years at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem has been acquired by a Presbyterian church in Sao Paulo, Brazil, whose members will remove the instrument in October. St. Paul's will use a temporary instrument until a new pipe organ is in place. Given by an anonymous donor, the new organ is scheduled to be ready by Easter 1994.

\ AN OLD-FASHIONED SUNDAY is planned for Oct. 10 at Lakeside Baptist Church, 447 Dalewood Ave., Salem. Activities will start at 10 a.m. and include music, preaching, lunch on the grounds and games played in an older era.

\ FIRST CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN, 2001 Carroll Ave. N.W., will conclude the celebration of its centennial on Oct. 17. A former pastor, the Rev. S. Earl Mitchell, will preach at 11 a.m. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

A 2:30 p.m. service will include the presentation of an anthem commissioned for First Church and composed by Jesse Hopkins of Bridgewater College. Memorabilia will be displayed from First Church.

Reservations are needed for lunch and must be made calling 562-1267 by Oct. 10. The meal is $8 and $4 for children 10 and under.

\ RESTORING POCAHONTAS ISLAND, a part of historic Petersburg that was heavily damaged in a summer tornado, is a goal of a disaster response team sponsored by the Virlina District of the Church of the Brethren. Volunteers are being sought to work the weeks of Oct. 11 and Oct. 25. Call the Rev. Glenn Kinsel, coordinator, 366-9280, for more information.

\ BISHOP RUSSELL INSTITUTE, a program of adult education with a Roman Catholic perspective, will continue three classes through mid-November.

"Understanding the New Testament" is being taught at St. Gerard's Church on Monday nights. "Discovering the Lord: A Spirituality for All Seasons" is being held at Our Lady of Nazareth Church on Monday nights and at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Salem on Tuesday nights.

All are in session from 7:30 to 9:30 and are taught by the Rev. John Boddie and Sister Eveline Murray and Kate Gernhardt. Call 387-0491 for more information.

\ HOLLINS COLLEGE has received a set of new hymnals as a gift from the class of 1993. "New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools" will be dedicated Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the service in Du Pont Chapel with the Rev. Jan Fuller-Carruthers, chaplain, officiating. Several hymns from the new book will be sung by the college choir directed by James Leland.

\ AN INTRODUCTION TO ISLAM is the theme of a class scheduled Wednesday and Oct. 13 in the library of St. John's Episcopal Church, South Jefferson Street at Elm Avenue in downtown Roanoke. The Rev. Kirk Ballin, minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Roanoke, will teach the class, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and includes video and discussion.
