CHILDREN'S FESTIVAL WILL HELP HANDICAPPED GIRL

The second annual children's festival in Salem on Oct. 16 will include a day of fun and games for healthy children to help a handicapped child attend a camp designed for physical disabilities.

The event - officially known as the Salem Children's Fall Festival - will be held at the Salem Farmer's Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Salem Junior Woman's Club and the Salem Department of Parks and Recreation are sponsors.

The rain date is Oct. 23.

Proceeds from the festival will go toward covering the cost of sending a handicapped child to Camp Easter Seal for a week next summer, said Terri Smith, co-chairman. She said the child - a girl - has already been selected.

The festival will include food, fun and games including clowns, petting zoo and a costume parade and contest. Pumpkin hunts will be held at 9:30 a.m. and at 1:30 p.m., a storytelling session at 10 a.m. and Buster the Clown from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A karate demonstration will be held at 9 a.m.

Throughout the day there will be carnival-type games, pumpkin decorating, fingerprinting of children by the Salem Police Department and entertainment.
