NEWBERN FALL FESTIVAL PLANNED OCT. 8-10

More than 200 vendors and entertainers from five states will be here Oct. 8-10 for Newbern's 13th annual Fall Festival of Arts & Crafts.

Newbern, in Pulaski County, is the only entire historic village in Virginia to be on the National Register of Historic Places.

The festival will start at 6 p.m. next Friday with a parade down the old Wilderness Road. Some of the craftspeople will set up then as well.

On Oct. 9, a ham biscuit breakfast will be offered at 6:30 a.m. by the Newbern Fire Department at the Church of God.

Hot-air balloons will be launched at 8 a.m., weather permitting, from P.J.'s Park (further balloon information is available by calling Dee J. Danner at 382-0201).

Golf starts at 9 a.m.

Lunch will be available starting at 11 a.m. all over town, with turkey and trimmings, Polish sausage, barbecue, elephant ears and funnel cakes among the traditional foods available.

Free tours of the Wilderness Road Regional Museum and other historic buildings, country stores and antiques shops, as well as two rose gardens, are planned.

The museum will hold a silent auction for items including a country ham, glassware, collectibles and a Civil War artist's print. Bidding will end at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 10. Bidders need not be present.

Other activities on the final day will start at noon, and include appearances by Rudy Bear, Woodsy Owl and Smokey Bear.

Booth spaces can be reserved and further information is available by calling June Quesenberry (674-5792), Ruby Alley (674-6880) or the museum (674-4835) or by writing to the Newbern Promotional Bureau, P.O. Box 373, Newbern, Va. 24126.

Newbern can be reached by taking exit 98 off Interstate 81 and following the signs to the museum.
