NO. 1 BENGALS RECOVER TO BEAT WARRIORS 66-39

Top-ranked Bassett shrugged off a sluggish first half and outscored Magna Vista 40-21 in the second half for a 66-39 Piedmont District girls' basketball victory Thursday night.

Kim Hairston had 21 points and Aimee Barker added 20 for the Bengals (10-0 overall, 8-0 district).

Magna Vista (6-2, 8-2) got a team-high 10 points from Tanesia Kellam. \ James River 52\ Craig County 28

NEW CASTLE - The Rockets turned the ball over 21 times, and the Knights capitalized by winning big in a Pioneer District game.

James River (4-5, 3-0) was led by Angie Johnson's 19 points and Teresa Hickman's 16. The Chargers (2-4, 1-2) were led by Chrissy Robertson's 16 points.

\ Shawsville 65\ Rocky Gap 52

SHAWSVILLE - Kelley Ryan and Brandy Alexander combined to score 10 straight points midway through the third quarter as the host Shawnees won a Mountain Empire District game.

Shawsville (5-4, 5-3) led by 10 at halftime, but Rocky Gap (6-3, 5-3) tied the game in the third after making the first five baskets of the second half.

Ryan, Alexander and Robin Burdette combined to score 53 of Shawsville's points.

\ Galax 58\ Fort Chiswell 45

MAX MEADOWS - Jacklyn Dickens scored 11 of her game-high 22 points in the second quarter as the Maroon Tide built a comfortable lead en route to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Galax (5-3, 5-2) outscored the Pioneers 25-13 in the second quarter to take a 35-21 lead at halftime. Tammy Cox added 11 points for the winners.

Fort Chiswell (4-5, 4-4) got 11 points from Chasity Wright.

\ Narrows 54\ Bland 24

NARROWS - The Green Wave bolted to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a Mountain Empire District victory.

Suzanne Webb and Melinda Freeman had 12 points each for Narrows (4-5, 3-5).

Bland got 16 points from Rachel French.

Glenvar 62\ Parry McCluer 35

BUENA VISTA - The Highlanders got 17 points from Torey Morris and 14 from Marilaea Hale in a Pioneer District victory.

Glenvar (7-3) led 37-19 at halftime and never looked back.

Stephanie Rhodes led the Fighting Blues (4-6) with 12 points.

\ Laurel Park 76\ Patrick County 63

MARTINSVILLE - Tanesha Hairston scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Lancers to a Piedmont District victory over the Cougars.

Torsheda Dillard added 14 points and Tiffany Lynch 13 for Laurel Park (6-4, 5-3).

Amy Nelson led Patrick County with 20 points. Charity Hagwood had 14 and Angie Noonhester 11.
