ANGLICANS HONOR SCOTT'S 15 YEARS AT PARISH

Parishioners of ST. PETER'S ANGLICAN CATHOLIC CHURCH recently surprised their rector, the Rev. Harry B. Scott, by presenting him in midservice with a framed certificate of appreciation for his 15 years with the Christiansburg congregation. After the Sept. 12 service, Scott was the honored guest at a reception in the parish house, during which he, his family and his congregation were treated to a "thank you" cake and lemonade and Scott received an inscribed sterling silver tray.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Scott is chairman of the Montgomery County Department of Social Services board, is active in the Christiansburg Ministerial Association, and has been president of the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program since 1975.

"How About Simplifying Your Life?" will be the question posed by Patrick Simpson, Sunday, 10:30 a.m., at the UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP OF THE NEW RIVER VALLEY, 1301 Gladewood Drive, Blacksburg.

A discussion will follow. Call 552-5273 or 552-4749 to learn more.

The Rev. Eileen W. Lindner will speak Sunday, 11 a.m. at BLACKSBURG PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, Church and Eakin streets. Lindner is associate for ecumenical relations in the Office of the General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.

For more information, call the church, 552-2504.

The REV. C. MAYNARD POWELL, pastor of Pulaski's First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1976, will leave the pastorate Nov. 18. Powell, 55, said he believes his ministry at the church has been fulfilled and that he wants to spend the remaining years of his career in a more specialized field of serving people. This probably will require his leaving Southwest Virginia, he said.

Powell came to First Church from Roanoke. With folk music as an avocation, he has often performed for community programs. For 15 years he has cooperated with the nearby First Presbyterian Church in teaching youth, and his church was an early supporter of Daily Bread, an ecumenical program that serves daily hot meals for people in need.

The Rev. Charles Seastrunk Jr. of Trinity Lutheran Church, Columbia, S.C., will be the guest preacher. Seastrunk was mission developer and first pastor of the Redeemer congregation when it was organized in 1960.

The old "red book" service in use at that time will be the order of worship Sunday. A dinner will be held in the parish hall following the service.

The Lutherans trace their history in Giles County to 1843, when Stony Creek Lutheran Church was organized by Pastor Solomon Schaeffer with 13 members. That congregation later became the Pembroke Lutheran Memorial Church, which built the present sanctuary in 1857. Today, the congregation boasts members from as far away as Vinton and Blacksburg.
