ROCKBRIDGE TRIPS ALLEGHANY

Rockbridge County converted a turnover into the winning points with two minutes left to hand Alleghany its first loss, 20-18, in a Blue Ridge District high school football game Friday night.

Rockbridge County (3-2 overall, 2-1 district) recovered a fumble on the Alleghany 27-yard line and moved in for the score.

The Wildcats led 14-8 at halftime, but Alleghany (4-1, 0-1) scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to take the lead. \

Magna Vista 42

Laurel Park 22

MARTINSVILLE - The Lancers fumbled deep in their territory on their first two possessions and the unbeaten Warriors capitalized on its way to a 28-0 halftime lead.

Magna Vista (4-0, 3-0) stretched its lead to 35-0 before Laurel Park scored in the third quarter. Evan Penn scored touchdowns on runs of 3, 1 and 3 yards for Magna Vista, ranked fourth in the state in Group AA. \

Bath County 20

Covington 0

HOT SPRINGS - The unbeaten Chargers drove 65 and 88 yards for touchdowns on their first two possessions and went on to whip the winless Cougars in a Pioneer District game.

Bath County (4-0, 2-0) needed only five plays to score on their first possession, with Billy Thomas getting the touchdown on a 1-yard run. After Covington failed to move the ball, the Chargers then drove 88 yards to make it 12-0 on Timmy Tuning's 13-yard touchdown reception from Thomas.

Bath County, which rolled up 311 yards total offense, tacked on its final points in the third quarter on Jamie Carroll's 3-yard run.

Michael Edwards paced the Bath attack with 137 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Covington, which threatened several times but never scored, is 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the league. \

Shawsville 13

Darrell Bibb scored on a 2-yard run with 1:06 remaining to give Gerry Cannaday his first victory as Shawnees coach.

Bland (2-3 overall, 0-3 Mountain Empire District) had led since the second quarter, when Monty Matthews kicked the first two field goals. Matthews' second field goal gave the Rockets a 12-7 lead entering the final quarter.

Mark Akers had 10 carries for 55 yards and one touchdown for Shawsville (1-3, 1-3). \

Floyd County 37

Fort Chiswell 6

FLOYD - The Buffaloes rushed for 315 yards and held the Pioneers (1-3, 1-1) to 134 yards total offense to register the Mountain Empire District victory.

Five players scored touchdowns for Floyd County (4-1, 3-1).

Winky Nichols led the Buffaloes with 72 yards on the ground, including a 29-yard touchdown run. \

Rural Retreat 42

Castlewood 6

RURAL RETREAT - Jason Childers rushed for 267 yards - about three times the amount Castlewood rushed for - and the Indians used a 30-point second half to whip the Blue Devils in a Hogoheegee District game.

Rural Retreat (4-1, 3-1) rushed for 452 yards, and Castlewood (1-4, 0-4) was held to 86 yards on the ground.

Indians running back Kevin Burton rushed for 112 yards and one touchdown on 13 carries. \

George Wythe 10

Lebanon 3

LEBANON - Chris Dickerson ran for 120 yards and scored the game's only touchdown on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to propel the unbeaten Maroons to the Hogoheegee District win over the Pioneers.

George Wythe (4-0, 3-0) got its other points on Randy Blevins' 28-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Chris Williams' 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter enabled Lebanon (3-2, 0-2) to avert the shutout. The Pioneers got the ball back late in the game and advanced to the GW 25-yard before the GW defense stopped them on downs.

Brian Houchins led the losers with 80 yards on 18 carries. \
