RADFORD GETS 1ST SOCCER WIN

Six singles players and three doubles teams from Virginia Tech advanced Friday at the West Virginia Annual Tennis Tournament in Morgantown, W.Va.

Scott Cuppett (No. 1), Oliver Mayo (No. 3), Miki Tusztai (No. 4), Lee Shackelford (No. 6), Adam Gottfried (No. 7) and Chad Toleafoa (No. 8) will compete in the second round of singles play today.

In doubles, three Hokies teams advanced to the finals. At first doubles, Cuppett and Tusztai upset the top-seeded team from Michigan. Andrew Krafft and Gottfried advanced at No. 3 and Shackelford and Toleafoa advanced at No. 4.

The singles and doubles finals will be played Sunday.

Because of cooler temperatures, racing at Franklin County Speedway tonight will begin an hour early. The first green flag for the Acme Business Machines 300 will drop at 7 p.m. All races tonight will be double points, and the Late Model Stock race will be shortened to 50 laps for the rest of the season.

Gates will open at noon, despite the earlier start of racing. Admission is $5, and children under 10 are admitted free.

Gerald Lakatos and Richard Sheperd scored the goals as Radford beat visiting Shepherd 2-0 to pick up its first men's soccer victory of the season. The Highlanders improved their record to 1-9-1.

Donnie Underwood of Roanoke bowled 300 for the first time in his 15-year career Wednesday night at All-Star Lanes. Underwood was bowling in an All-Star Triangle League match when he rolled the perfect game.

In Charlottesville, Tracy Guilford scored in the second half to lead eighth-ranked Connecticut to a 1-0 victory over 14th-ranked Virginia in non-conference women's soccer. Virginia (4-3-1) outshot the Huskies (9-1) and missed several scoring opportunities.

Roanoke Valley Christian defeated Fishburne Military 2-1 in overtime in high school soccer. Mark Hillis scored with 2 minutes left in the second overtime for the Eagles (5-0-1 overall, 4-0 in the Virginia Independent Conference). Fishburne is 1-5, 1-3.
