Senior linebacker Chuck Schofield, 17, died at 12:35 p.m. Thursday at Camden Clark Hospital after his family decided to disconnect life supports, coach Kenny Wright said. Schofield's family and friends were with him when he died.
"This is my 35th year of coaching, and me and my coaching staff are absolutely devastated," Wright said from the hospital.
Schofield, the team's leading tackler, collapsed during the Sept. 24 game with Wirt County, apparently within 30 minutes of sustaining a blow to the head, the coach said.
"Our community, our coaching staff and our fans have been in a state of shock, so we haven't had time to look at the films," Wright said.
Schofield developed blood clots in his lungs after immediate surgery for a torn artery in his brain. The player underwent surgery Sunday, but swelling worsened in his brain Wednesday.
Doctors determined Thursday that all of Schofield's brain activity had ceased. Wright said life supports were halted after a conference between Schofield's doctors and his family.
