FEMALE GOALIE TRYING OUT FOR ECHL TEAM

Erin Whitten, the second woman ever to play professional hockey, will get a tryout next week with the Toledo Storm of the East Coast Hockey League. Toledo coach Chris McSorley told the Glens Falls (N.Y.) Post-Star he plans to start Whitten, a goaltender, in an exhibition game Oct. 9.

"She's a great athlete, she's quick. She'll definitely contend for a job," McSorley said.

In an exhibition game Saturday in her hometown of Glens Falls, Whitten tended goal for the Adirondack Red Wings, the top affiliate of the NHL's Detroit Red Wings.

Whitten joined Manon Rheaume, a minor-league goalie in the Tampa Bay Lightning's organization, as the only women to play pro hockey. Rheaume played in an exhibition game for the Lightning last season.

\ The owner of the Philadelphia Flyers announced a deal to fund a $100 million sports arena for his NHL team and the NBA's 76ers after two years of setbacks. PNC Bank and Spectacor, the project's developer, have agreed to terms for a loan. However, PNC still must persuade other lending institutions to help raise more than $100 million. The other lenders must agree to terms by November.
