PATRICK HENRY ROLLS OVER HALIFAX COUNTY 34-7

Rod Akers scampered 72 yards for a touchdown on the game's second play, and Patrick Henry went on to whip Halifax County 34-7 in a non-district game Friday night.

Akers finished with 174 yards rushing and three touchdowns on eight carries.

The Patriots (2-2) rolled up 299 yards on the ground. The Comets (0-5) were held to 132 yards rushing.

Halifax County closed to 20-7 in the third quarter, but Patrick Henry struck twice in the fourth quarter.

Akers scored on a 62-yard run, and quarterback Shannon Taylor threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Cook.

The Patriots overcame four fumbles, all of which the Comets recovered.

James River 7

BUCHANAN - The Knights (0-4, 0-1) fumbled away their chances of beating the Highlanders (1-4, 1-0) in the Pioneer District opener for both teams.

Trailing 6-0 in the third quarter, James River drove to Glenvar's 5-yard line, then fumbled. The Highlanders' Chad Wallace picked the ball up at the 7 and ran 93 yards for a touchdown and a 12-0 lead.

Glenvar running back Eric East led the rushing attack with 207 yards and one touchdown on 32 carries. \

Liberty 27

LOVINGSTON - The Minutemen built a 20-point halftime lead and cruised to their fourth consecutive victory, handing the Governors their fourth consecutive loss.

Four players had rushing touchdowns for Liberty, which improved its record to 4-1 overall and in the Seminole District. The Minutemen were poised for a shutout until Nelson County (0-4, 0-4) scored a late touchdown on a 30-yard pass to Lamont Loving from Delane Fitzgerald. \

APPOMATTOX - Sophomore backfield mates Daniel Evans and Brandon Allen figured in four touchdowns as the Raiders (1-4, 1-4) defeated the Golden Eagles (0-4, 0-4) in a Seminole District game that featured 22 penalties.

Evans, Appomattox County's backup quarterback, passed for two touchdowns and Allen rushed for two.

Allen's second touchdown, a 45-yard run, clinched the victory, putting the Raiders up 27-18 with 1:56 left. Allen finished with 121 yards on 15 carries.

Staunton River cut the deficit to three on Dwight Orange's 15-yard scoring run with 19 seconds left. Jeff English (66 yards) and Orange (65) led the Golden Eagles' offense.

Staunton River was penalized 12 times for 70 yards and lost two fumbles. The Raiders were flagged 10 times for 70 yards and fumbled four times, losing three. \

Franklin County 3

LYNCHBURG - The Eagles were soaring after the first half against the Hilltoppers (2-3) in a non-district game, leading 3-0.

Then the second half started.

Ronnie Turner ran 67 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, and Franklin County's woes continued. The Eagles (0-4) have lost 22 consecutive games, the longest current streak in Group AAA. Turner finished his evening's work with 124 yards on 11 carries.

This was the closest the Eagles have come to winning during the streak.
