GARLAND ANNIVERSARY

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen Garland, Sr., of Roanoke, celebrate 50 years of marriage this weekend with family and friends gathering to mark their October 2, 1943, wedding day.

Robert (Bob) Garland, a pharmacist, owned and operated his own drug store on Grandin Road and served on Roanoke City Council for 24 years. Frances Rebecca Vaughan Garland, originally from Crewe, taught Sunday School for over 30 years at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, and has had longtime involvement in Republican and civic activities in Roanoke.

The couple was married at Crewe Baptist Church and honeymooned in New York City at the Waldorf-Astoria ($7.50 a night with the serviceman's discount). They attended the 1943 World Series prior to the groom's return to U.S. Army service.

They have four children, Bob, Jr., Becky, Anita, and Teresa; and four grandchildren, Rob, John, Scott, and Greg Garland.
