MARTINSVILLE WINS, STAYS UNBEATEN IN PIEDMONT

Martinsville erupted for 21 points in a five-minute span of the third quarter to blow open a close game and beat Tunstall 28-0 in a battle of Piedmont District unbeaten squads on Friday night in high school football.

Freshman Manti Venable, who had 103 yards on 18 carries, scored on runs of 4 and 6 yards in the Martinsville third-quarter barrage. Nakia Townsends got the other touchdown on a 2-yard run for the Bulldogs (4-0, 3-0).

Tunstall (3-1, 2-1) and it's great quarterback Khris Law were completely stymied by Martinsville's defense. \

Narrows 35

Grayson County 7

INDEPENDENCE - Michael Blankenship rushed for 122 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Narrows in a Mountain Empire District thumping of Grayson County.

Narrows (3-1 overall, 1-1 district) held the Blue Devils (3-2, 2-1) to just 73 total yards. The Green Wave ran 54 plays from scrimmage to Grayson County's 33.

Bassett 6

COLLINSVILLE - Brian Alley ran for one touchdown and threw for another as the Cavaliers defeated the Bengals for a Piedmont District victory.

Bassett (1-3, 0-3) took a six-point lead in the second quarter when Andre Fuller caught an 18-yard pass from Chris Hairston. The Bengals tried to score again, but Todd Pringle intercepted a pass on the 1-yard line with seven seconds left in the half.

The second half belonged to Fieldale-Collinsville (2-2, 2-1). In the third quarter, Mansino Craighead, who carried 12 times for 67 yards, ran in a 1-yard touchdown and Alley ran 10 yards for another score. \

Giles 52

Galax 0

PEARISBURG - The Spartans (5-0, 4-0) thrashed the Maroon Tide (1-4, 1-3) in a Mountain Empire District game, amassing 410 yards of total offense and limiting Galax to 65 yards.

Giles has averaged 42 points per game this season.

Tailback Raypheal Milton piled up 151 yards of total offense - 70 yards rushing, 81 passing - to lead the Spartans' single-wing attack.

The Maroon Tide was held to minus-4 yards passing in the Spartans' first shutout of the season.

Giles put away Galax by scoring 20 points in the second and third quarters.
