HOKIES TAKE TITLE AT VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

Led by most valuable player Laura Hanner, Virginia Tech won the Hardee's/Comfort Inn VT Classic volleyball tournament in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (12-7) defeated Marshall 15-7, 15-6, 15-9 in their first match and downed East Tennessee State 15-9, 15-10, 15-12.

Heather Berglund and Hanner made the all-tournament team for Virginia Tech.

In Fredericksburg, Washington and Lee All-American Marilyn Baker reached the finals in the singles and doubles draws in the Rolex Division III Southeast Tennis Regional. She will play Leslie Roland of Mary Washington in the finals.

In Morgantown, W.Va., Scott Cuppett and Miki Pusztai gave Virginia Tech the title in No. 1 doubles Saturday at the West Virginia Invitational.

Cuppett and Pusztai defeated Steve Flanigan and David Critchely of the host school 8-2 in a pro set.

The Hokies will be seeking more titles today. In singles: Oliver Mayo takes on the Mountaineers' Critchely at No. 3; Lee Shackleford faces Michigan's Chris Wyatt at No. 6; Adam Gottfried meets WVU's Rod Stevula at No. 7; and Chad Taleafoa plays WVU's Bobby Walsh at No. 8. In the No. 3 doubles final, Gottfried and Andrew Kraft face Stevula and Walsh of West Virginia.

Host Radford beat Abingdon 45-37 in a non-district girls' high school basketball game on Saturday. Charlee Taylor paved the way for the Bobcats (3-9) with 19 points. Cathy Richardson added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Bobcats. \
