CHARLOTTE POLO PONY DIES IN SYMPHONY FUND-RAISER

A 13-year-old mare died of an aneurysm during Saturday's polo match to raise money for the Roanoke Symphony, but her team went on to win the event.

Chris Barnes, show chairwoman, said the horse belonged to Henry Cato, a member of the Charlotte, N.C., team. She said Cato had just begun play when his teammates noticed the horse was in trouble. They alerted Cato and he avoided injury when the horse fell.

Barnes said the horse was not stressed when it had the attack.

This was the sixth annual match and the third in Roanoke County's Green Hill Park. Barnes said it is expected to make $18,000 to $20,000 for the symphony.
