OWNERS AMONG RICHEST

Eight controlling owners of major-league baseball teams are on the latest list of the Forbes 400 richest Americans, topped by Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner at $2.2 billion.

Turner, who was tied for 27th overall in the list released Sunday, was followed by H. Wayne Huizenga of the Florida Marlins at $670 million, and Carl Pohlad of the Minnesota Twins and Mike Ilitch of the Detroit Tigers at $600 million each.

Muriel Kauffman, wife of the late Kansas City Royals owner Ewing Kauffman, was at $500 million. Walter A. Haas Jr. of the Oakland Athletics was at $410 million, Drayton McLane Jr. of the Houston Astros at $305 million and Gene Autry of the California Angels at $300 million.

The richest NFL owner, according to the list, is Preston Robert Tisch at $1.3 billion. He owns 50 percent of the New York Giants.

William Clay Ford of the Detroit Lions was at $900 million, Jack Kent Cooke of the Washington Redskins at $800 million, Leon Hess of the New York Jets at $775 million, Hugh Culverhouse of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at $360 million and Kenneth Behring of the Seattle Seahawks at $320 million.

Turner, who also owns the Atlanta Hawks, is the richest NBA owner, followed by Richard DeVos of the Orlando Magic at $1.7 billion. Another NBA owner on the list is Melvin Simon of the Indianapolis Pacers at $300 million.

The list included two NHL owners - Huizenga, who owns the new Florida Panthers, and Ilitch, owner of the Detroit Red Wings - plus Michael Eisner, chairman of the Walt Disney Co., which owns the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
