RECORD FALLS IN RADFORD SOCCER WIN

Sue Williams set a school record with the 22nd assist of her career as Radford blanked visiting Maryland-Baltimore County 3-0 on Sunday in Big South Conference women's soccer.

Williams scored the game's first goal, nine seconds into the second half, off an assist from Erin McCarthy. Her record assist - surpassing the mark set last season by Jackie Tamasi - came at 2 minutes, 18 seconds of the half on a goal by Jennifer Blackburn.

McCarthy also scored a goal for the Highlanders (10-0 overall, 4-0 in the Big South), and Amy Pseja made one save en route to her eighth shutout.

In other soccer:

Dustin Fonder and Rick Wells scored the goals as the Roanoke College men's team set a school record with its 10th consecutive victory, a 2-0 decision over visiting Maryville (Tenn.).

The Maroons (10-1) have outscored opponents 39-2 during the streak, which bettered the previous mark set in 1967. Fonder's goal gave him at least one point in every game during the streak.

Rick Keeley stopped six shots by Maryville (6-3) en route to his sixth shutout.

Lisa Frazino scored with 23 seconds left in the second overtime to give the Roanoke College women's team a 1-0 victory over visiting Maryville, Tenn.

Meredith Arnott assisted on the goal, which gave the Maroons (5-4) their fifth consecutive victory - four of them in overtime. Heather Harlan made 12 saves to shut out Maryville (7-4).

In Raleigh, N.C., Mike Slivinski scored two goals and assisted on one as top-ranked Virginia defeated North Carolina State 3-1, tying an ACC record for consecutive victories in men's play.

The Cavaliers (10-0, 4-0) have won 16 consecutive matches to tie the record held by Maryland (1958-59), Clemson (1973, 1976) and Virginia (1991, 1992). The Wolfpack is 5-5 overall, 0-3 in the conference.

In Charlottesville, Liz Kelley scored two goals as 14th-ranked Virginia beat Brown 5-2 in women's soccer.

The Cavaliers (5-3-1) used 23 players while outshooting Brown 33-4. The Bears are 3-5.

In Fredericksburg, freshman goalie Beth Mozena made eight saves but couldn't overcome a porous defense as Trinity (Texas) routed Washington and Lee 6-0 in a women's game played at Mary Washington College. The Generals' record slipped to 5-3.

In Greenville, S.C., 18th-ranked Furman scored six times in the first half and went on to rout VMI 8-1 in a Southern Conference men's game.

Trey Kirby scored the lone goal for the Keydets (2-6-1, 0-2-1). The Paladins improved their record to 7-1, 5-0.

One team received an automatic bid and two other Roanoke Star White teams won matches to qualify for the Virginia Youth Association tournament later this month.

The Under-16 team received a bye because it is ranked No. 7 in the state. Star White will compete in the under-16 tournament Oct. 24-25 in Washington.

Steve Hamblen, Don Haga and Trevor Plunkett each scored as the Under-15 Roanoke Star White team defeated the Washington Thunder 3-1 in Washington. Roanoke will face the Pocoshock Panthers from Richmond in a single-elimination round Oct. 16 in Roanoke.

Paul Wallace, Wade Forte and Stuart Angel scored to lead the Under-14 Roanoke Star White team past host Richmond Magic-A 3-1. Star White will place in the Under-14 tournament Oct. 24-25 in Virginia Beach.
