TEACHER OF THE WEEK

At a glance it would appear that Carol Baumgardner's fifth-graders are missing something: textbooks. Actually, they aren't missing them, they just don't use them. As a science teacher, Baumgardner says she prefers to use assorted audiovisual aids, computers, hands-on labs and speakers from the community.

She also uses field trips as resources for learning. Her classes have visited many exciting places, including the Maryland Science Center, and both the art and science museums of Richmond.

Baumgardner says she believes education should be a tool to set out a future for her pupils. A good teacher should be able to adjust to changes, work with the needs of the individual, and maybe most importantly, put subjects on the students' level, she said. "Mrs. Baumgardner puts all her heart into teaching to make education fun," said the pupil who nominated her.

Baumgardner has taught for 15 years and has two grown children. In her free time she likes to do crossword puzzles, needlework and read.

If you have a nomination for Teacher of the Week, send the name of the nominee, his or her school and why you think that teacher should be honored. Include your name, telephone number and school and send to NewsFun, P.O. Box 2491, Roanoke 24010-2491. The Science Museum of Western Virginia will award each Teacher of the Week a gift certificate for $50 to be spent at the museum's Teacher Resource Center.
