ROANOKE VALLEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS

Home sales in the Roanoke Valley set a record last month, according to a report released Monday.

"September sales were fantastic," said Anne Lee Stevens, president of the Roanoke Valley Association of Realtors. "Third-quarter contracts are up 6 percent over the same period last year. This is the best September and best third quarter we've had since we've been keeping records."

The association reported 386 homes placed under contract in September, up 21.4 percent from 318 in September 1992 and 1.8 percent from 379 homes sold in August.

For the first nine months, contracts increased 10 percent over 1992.

She attributed the performance to a strong local economy, low interest rates and a good supply of homes for sale.

The median price of a new home sold last month was $92,500. The higher-than-usual median reflected sales of nine homes for more than $300,000 and one over $500,000.
