NEW CITADEL BARRACKS CAN WORK WITH WOMEN

The Citadel, which is fighting to block women from joining its all-male corps of cadets, will build new barracks that could be modified to accommodate both sexes if it loses the court challenge.

The military college has embarked on a $50 million program to replace its aging barracks, one of which is 70 years old. At the same time, it is being sued by an 18-year-old woman who says the school's all-male policy is unconstitutional.

Architects have drawn up plans that will easily allow some storage areas to be converted into rest rooms and showers for women if necessary, said Col. Bob Barton, the Citadel's vice president for facilities and construction. - Associated Press
