BYRD NIPS RADFORD AT BUZZER

Jaclyn Banks hit the winning shot at the buzzer Monday night to propel William Byrd to a 34-32 victory over Radford in girls' high school basketball.

The Terriers (7-3) worked the clock down to eight seconds before getting the ball inside to Banks, who converted the game-winner. Banks had seven points for William Byrd, as did Cathy Smith.

Kelli Runyon led the Terriers on defense with five steals. William Byrd utilized a full-court press in the second half to outscore the Bobcats 23-14.

Radford (3-9) got 11 points each from Cathy Richardson and Charlee Taylor.

The Bobcats led 18-11 at halftime but succumbed to Byrd's pressure in the second half. \

Christiansburg 47

Northside 39

Rebecca McNeil dominated the boards as the Blue Demons defeated the Vikings in non-district action.

McNeill scored most of her 29 points on put-backs and finished with 16 rebounds to lead Christiansburg (2-6).

Shannon Yopp led Northside with 12 points and Sarah Hicks added 10. \

Staunton River 52

Jefferson Forest 39

Tanya Nelms scored 24 points to lead the Golden Eagles past the Cavaliers in the Seminole District.

Nelms hit all four of her 3-pointers in the second and third quarters as Staunton River (8-1, 8-1) turned back every comeback bid by Jefferson Forest (2-8, 2-8).

Kim English added 11 points for the Golden Eagles, and Jenny Childress had 11 to lead Forest. \

Salem 48

James River 43

Shellie Johnson scored nine of her 20 points in the third quarter to rally the Spartans past the Knights in a non-district contest.

James River (4-6) controlled the first half and led 25-17 at halftime. Salem (5-4) rallied in the third quarter to outscore the Knights 16-6.

Angie Johnson scored 16 points and Teresa Hickman added 11 to lead James River. \
