RURAL RETREAT GETS BY GEORGE WYTHE

Kathy Osborne hit the front end of a one-and-one with 11 seconds to go in overtime as Rural Retreat turned back George Wythe's upset bid 46-45 on Tuesday night in the Hogoheegee District.

Tanya Tarter scored 15 points to lead the Indians (11-0 overall and in the district), who lost three players to fouls. Osborne finished with 14.

Stacey Green scored 16 points and Lisa Garland added 12 for the Maroons (1-9, 1-9), which lost four starters to fouls but stayed in the game by hitting 12 of 16 free throws. The Indians missed 20 of their 36 shots from the line.

Auburn 64\ Rocky Gap 50

ROCKY GAP - Renay Gardner scored eight of her 13 points in the fourth quarter as Auburn (8-2, 7-2) pulled away for a Mountain Empire District victory over Rocky Gap (5-4, 5-4).

Auburn outscored the hosts 20-8 in the final period, after struggling to overcome the absence of Sherry Smith, who missed the game with the flu.

Carroll County 36\ Craig County 33\ HILLSVILLE - None of the Cavaliers scored in double digits, but Carroll County (3-5) still managed to defeat the Rockets (7-3) in a non-district matchup.

INDEPENDENCE - Kelley Ryan scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Shawnees (6-4, 6-4) pulled away for the Mountain Empire District victory over the Blue Devils (1-9, 1-8).

William Byrd 71\ Alleghany 56

Kelly Runyon led a spirited defense with seven steals and the Terriers (8-3) wore down the Mountaineers (8-3) with pressure in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.

Northside 67\ Rockbridge County 35

Terri Craig came off the bench and scored 12 points as the Vikings (5-6) pounded the Wildcats (5-6) in the Blue Ridge District opener for both teams.

COVINGTON - The Highlanders (8-3, 4-0) pressured the Cougars (2-7, 2-1) early and rode a balanced offense to the Pioneer District victory.

Martinsville 71\ Chatham 61\ MARTINSVILLE - Keenya Hairston and Samantha Ferguson combined for 45 points as the Bulldogs (8-3, 8-1) defeated the Cavaliers in the Piedmont District.

Bassett 60\ Patrick County 47\ STUART - Aimee Barker scored 28 points to lead the Bengals (11-0, 9-0) past the Cougars in a Piedmont District game.

Fort Chiswell 64\ Bland 21\ BLAND - Trish Stewart scored 18 points as the Pioneers (5-5, 5-4) had little trouble with the Rockets (O-11, 0-9) in the Mountain Empire District.

Laurel Park 72\ Tunstall 39\ DRY FORK - Torsheda Dillard scored 24 points and Tanesha Hairston added 16 as the Lancers (7-4, 6-3) overpowered the Trojans in the Piedmont District.
