CHURCH TO CELEBRATE PAYING OFF MORTGAGE

Members of \ NORTHSIDE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1017 Progress St. N.W., Blacksburg, will gather Sunday to burn a 20-year-old mortgage - two years ahead of schedule - and to consider a new building-expansion program.

Actually, they'll burn a copy of the check that will pay off the $175,000 note, taken out in 1975 to construct the present church building, church spokesman Ken Rystrom said.

Under consideration are plans to finish a basement area beneath the main sanctuary to make space for church school classrooms, Boy Scout meetings and a Montgomery County Christmas Store collection point.

The church also plans to fill an open area between the sanctuary and the original chapel, where Northside got its start 49 years ago as a mission of Blacksburg Presbyterian Church. Rystrom said Northside would like to construct a new entrance and narthex there.

The congregation will vote on the proposals Oct. 24.

Sylvia Clute will present "Growing Up in a `Religious Battlefield,' " Sunday, 10:30 a.m., at the\ UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWSHIP OF THE NEW RIVER VALLEY, 1301 Gladewood Drive, Blacksburg.

A discussion will follow. Call 552-5273 or 552-4749 to learn more.

Giles County Lutherans will be "retracing Lutheran steps" Sunday as their monthlong celebration of 150 years of service and ministry continues at\ CLOVER HOLLOW CHRISTIAN CHURCH, four miles north of Newport on Virginia 601.

The Rev. Auburn F. Bowers of Pulaski - who was pastor when the church celebrated its centennial in 1943 - will speak at an 11 a.m. heritage service. This will be an informal service of hymn singing.

The Clover Hollow congregation dates to 1848, when it was known as "Solomon's Temple" after Solomon Schaeffer, who organized the county's first Lutheran congregation.

The present Clover Hollow church was built by the Lutherans around 1875; it was rebuilt on the original foundation by the Christian Church in 1921, using the original windows, steeple and doors.

The Giles Lutheran Parish traces Lutheran activity in the county to the 18th century. Among early Lutheran pioneers was Adam Harman, the man credited with discovering Mary Ingles in 1755 as she was making her way back to Drapers Meadow (present-day Blacksburg) following her escape from Indians. (Her journey is dramatized every summer in "The Long Way Home" outdoor drama in Radford.)

An interesting footnote: Giles Lutheran Parish pastor, the Rev. Dennis Gillespie, is among Harman's direct descendants.

Gillespie can tell you more at 921-1718 or 921-4352.
