Marquette University, responding to concerns from American Indians, will drop "Warriors" as the nickname for its athletic teams, a published report said.

Marquette athletic director Bill Cords, contacted by The Associated Press, would not confirm or deny a report in Friday's editions of The Capital Times of Madison that the change will be announced next week.

"Warriors" became the school nickname in 1954 on the recommendation of a student committee that felt the name reflected the American Indians' close relationship with the Jesuits in settlement days.
