GILES RIPS FORT CHISWELL TO RUN RECORD TO 6-0

Giles, ranked fifth in the state in Group A, ran its record to 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the Mountain Empire District with the 41-7 thrashing of Fort Chiswell Friday night in high school football.

Peter Janney had touchdown runs of 47 and 9 yards and also scored on a two-point conversion for Giles, which had 478 yards to the Pioneers' 96.

It was 34-0 before Fort Chiswell (1-4 overall, 1-2 district) scored on a 7-yard touchdown run by Dennis Thomas in the fourth quarter. \

Narrows 33

Shawsville 0

NARROWS - Whitey Blankenship ran for 240 yards and three touchdowns as Narrows shut out Shawsville in a Mountain Empire District game.

Blankenship scored twice on short runs and once on a 60-yarder for Narrows (4-1 overall, 2-1 in the district). Shawsville (1-4, 1-4) gained just 76 total yards, 64 rushing.

Narrows had 403 yards on the ground, including 72 on nine carries from Brett Moseley. \

Auburn 21

Grayson County 3

RINER - The Eagles limited the Blue Devils to 80 yards of total offense in recording the Mountain Empire District victory.

Auburn (2-3, 2-2) got all the points it would need on a 33-yard touchdown run by David Hughes in the first quarter. Hughes finished with 61 rushing yards on seven carries.

Bobby Bonds and B.J. Lumia also scored for the Eagles. Bonds led Auburn with 71 yards on 11 carries.

Grayson County is 3-3 and 2-2. \

Floyd County 29

Bland County 17

BLAND - Floyd County put together two long scoring drives in the third quarter to top Bland County in a Mountain Empire District game.

Bland (2-4, 0-3) scored 17 second-quarter points in a span of nine minutes to take a two-point halftime lead.

But Floyd's first second-half drive covered 57 yards in 4:09 and ended with Winky Nichols' 1-yard run. The Buffaloes then drove 75 yards, using about 7 1/2 minutes, and went ahead when Jason Pratt scored on a 25-yard run.

Jamie Warren had 13 carries for 75 yards for Floyd (not including his 60-yard kick return for a touchdown), and Nichols had 12 carries for 63 yards. For Bland, John Stinson had 13 rushes for 81 yards and Joe Cromer 11 for 75.

Craig County 7

NEW CASTLE - Shahan Burrell scored three touchdowns to lead the Knights past the Rockets in a matchup of winless Pioneer District teams.

Burrell's second score came on a 2-yard return of a blocked field goal attempt with no time left in the first half. He also scored on runs of 3 and 11 yards.

Burrell (94 yards) and Todd Washington (61) led the James River offense.

Quarterback Robbie Huffman had a big game for Craig County (0-5, 0-2), completing 12 passes for 142 yards.

James River is 1-5, 1-1. \

George Wythe 41

Galax 14

WYTHEVILLE - Tony Callahan ran for two touchdowns, and the Maroons rolled over the Maroon Tide in a non-district game.

Galax (1-4) took a 7-6 lead, but George Wythe (5-0) rolled off 35 unanswered points to blow the game open.

George Wythe is ranked 10th in Timesland. \
