HOT SHOTS PREVAIL AT NATIONALS

The Roanoke Hot Shots overcame 119-degree heat on the courts Friday to beat New England 4-1 in their first match at the 4.0 United State Tennis Association National Championships in Palm Springs, Calif.

Lynn Snead and Sue Colbourne won singles matches, while Donna Mills and Wendela Barham; and Page Griffin and Randye Finigan won doubles matches.

The Hot Shots qualified for the tournament by winning the district and Mid-Atlantic Sectional tournaments, and are one of 17 teams competing from the continental United States, Hawaii and the Caribbean.

Roanoke will play Northwestern today at 9 a.m., and Southern California at 2:30 p.m. If the Hot Shots win both matches, they will advance to Sunday's semifinals.

In other tennis:

Virginia Tech went 3-3 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in Friday's individual portion of the eight-team Virginia Tech Invitational women's tennis tournament in Blacksburg.

The tournament, which runs through Sunday, includes Tech, James Madison, Maryland, American, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro, Davidson and Winthrop.
