VA. COUNTY LOSES BID FOR PLANT BRISTOL COMPANY CHOOSES N.C. SITE

A cow pasture soon will be transformed into a $40 million, 50-acre complex that will bring 750 new jobs to Alleghany County in northwestern North Carolina.

Bristol Compressors Inc. of Bristol, Va., which builds refrigeration and air-conditioning parts, announced Friday that it chose Sparta over Esserville, Va., for its plant.

Esserville is in Wise County.

The announcement came after a year of narrowing a list of 110 sites to Sparta and Esserville. Bristol then began negotiating on the type of incentives each could offer.

Wise County offered incentives worth about $16 million, according to County Administrator Scott Davis.

Alleghany County's incentive package totaled about $15.5 million, including more than $3 million from the county, $600,000 from Sparta, $600,000 each from the Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corp. and Skyline Telephone Membership Corp. and $600,000 from other businesses. The state is offering more than $7 million in new and improved roads, a sewage plant and grants.
