I-AA DAVIDSON RALLIES PAST W&L

Richard Howell ran for three touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter that rallied Division I-AA Davidson to a 21-14 college football victory over Division III Washington and Lee on Saturday.

Davidson (2-3) trailed 14-7 going into the final period before getting touchdown runs of 1 and 6 yards from Howell, who finished with 75 yards on 24 carries.

The Generals (0-4) had one last chance when they recovered a Wildcats fumble at the W&L 5-yard line and drove to the Davidson 32. W&L turned over the ball on downs with 2:32 left, and Davidson ran out the clock.

Brooks Fischer threw touchdown passes of 11 yards to Wilson Moore and 5 yards to Tom Mason that put the Generals up 14-7 with 31 seconds left in the first half.

Hampden-Sydney 7

EMORY - Todd Lee scored on a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter as the Wasps (5-1 overall, 3-0 ODAC) defeated the Tigers (3-2, 2-1) in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

Eric Montgomery completed nine of 22 passes for 122 yards as E&H compiled 276 total yards. Charles Cole gained 56 yards on 16 carries, and Lee had 50 yards on 16 carries.

Hampden-Sydney scored in the fourth quarter when Cetric Gayles caught a 61-yard pass from Brian Crist.

Delaware 38

HARRISONBURG - Mike Cawley's 3-yard touchdown run with 12 seconds left gave the Dukes a Yankee Conference victory over the previously undefeated Blue Hens, ranked No. 2 in Division I-AA.

The Dukes (3-3, 1-2) defeated a Division I-AA opponent for the first time in four games this season. James Madison is 7-2 against ranked opponents in two-plus season under coach Rip Scherer.

Delaware (4-1, 2-1) rallied from a 28-14 halftime deficit to tie at 35.

Cawley was intercepted by Chris Johnson at the Delaware 43-yard line with 12:02 remaining. Six plays later, Steve Leo kicked a 20-yard field goal to put Delaware up 38-35 at the 9:53 mark.

JMU's next possession ended when Cawley fumbled the ball at the Delaware 27 with 3:58 to go. The Dukes' defense then forced the Blue Hens to punt, and Madison took over on the Delaware 39 with 1:53 remaining. Eight plays later, Cawley scored on third and goal.

Maine 14

PORTLAND, Maine - Greg Lilly ran for one touchdown and threw for another as the Spiders (5-1, 3-1) defeated the Black Bears (2-3, 1-2) in a Yankee Conference game.

Richmond led 17-7 after a 25-yard field goal by Kevin Longacre in the fourth quarter. Maine rallied with an 80-yard touchdown drive - aided by Richmond penalties for roughing the kicker and roughing the quarterback - for Steve Knight's touchdown to trail 17-14. Maine recovered its onside kick, but the Black Bears fumbled two plays later and failed on their final drive.

Lilly, the 1992 Yankee Conference player of the year, tied the score at 7-7 with a 19-yard run in the first quarter, then gave Richmond the lead with a 9-yard pass to Rod Boothes in the third.

Liberty 13 TROY, Ala. - Kelvin Simmons threw for a career-high 269

yards in leading the Trojans, ranked No. 3 in Division I-AA, over the Flames (3-3). Troy State (6-0) extended its winning streak to 10.

The Trojans opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a 76-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard touchdown run by Simmons. Fullback Derrick Washington and Robert Kilow added two touchdowns in the half.

Travis Wilemon pass to Maurice Jones for a touchdown, and Daniel Whitehead hit a 36-yard field goal that cut the Flames' halftime deficit to 21-10. Whitehead added a field goal in the third quarter to pull Liberty to 28-13.

\ Hampton U. 42, Virginia State 14: At Hampton, Matt Montgomery threw for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth to lead the Pirates (6-0, 5-0) over the Trojans (5-1, 4-1) in a battle of the Central Intercollegiate Association's last two unbeaten teams. Hampton is ranked No. 3 in Division II.

\ Methodist 17, Bridgewater 14: At Fayetteville, N.C., Terrance Evans scored on a 44-yard run with 7:22 left to rally the Monarchs (3-2) past the Eagles (1-4). Ronnie Howard rushed 38 times for 233 yards and scored on runs of 25 and 4 yards as Bridgewater built a 14-10 lead midway through the third quarter.

\ Norfolk State 54, Winston-Salem State 54: At Winston-Salem, N.C., Kermit Buggs threw a 25-yard touchdown pass with three seconds left and then scampered for the two-point conversion as the Spartans (2-3-1, 1-3-1) rallied from a 27-point deficit to tie the Rams in a CIAA game. Down 47-20 in the fourth quarter, Norfolk State scored on two touchdown passes, a fumble return for a touchdown and a long run to pull to 54-46 with 4:20 to play. Buggs threw four first-half interceptions. Winston-Salem State quarterback Rovell McMillian threw for a school-record six touchdowns; Oronde Gadsden set a school record and tied a CIAA record with five touchdown catches; and Rich Huntley rushed for a school-record 305 yards on a school- and CIAA-record 45 carries.

\ Randolph-Macon 27, Western Maryland 27: At Westminster, Md., Dexter Hurt's 7-yard touchdown run and Andy Bush's 66-yard touchdown pass to Garry Carter in the fourth quarter led the Yellow Jackets (2-2-1) to a tie with Western Maryland (1-3-1), the third tie between the teams in their past seven meetings. Bush missed the extra-point kick.

\ Union (Ky.) 44, Clinch Valley 7: At Wise, Clarence Mackey rushed 29 times for 157 yards and touchdowns of 1, 7 and 3 yards to help the Bulldogs (4-1) defeat Clinch Valley (2-3). Union had more than 600 total yards. Quarterback David Nara's 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter pulled Clinch Valley to 16-7.

\ Virginia Union 67, Elizabeth City State 0: At Richmond, Bobby Phillips rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns - both career-highs - to help the Panthers (2-3-1, 2-1-1) whip the Vikings (0-6, 0-5) in a CIAA game. Elizabeth City had 270 total yards and allowed 560.
