PARKING AT THE HOTEL NOT PERFECT

Q: Along with a couple of hundred others, I paid $3 to park at the Hotel Roanoke for the Aerosmith concert Sept. 28 at the civic center. Who gets that money? And why didn't they turn on the lights and have security guards on duty? M.L., Roanoke

A: The lot wasn't supposed to be open that night because electricity for the light circuit was turned off during Hotel Roanoke construction. However, a chain across the entrance somehow "came down" early that night, the operator said.

When city police informed him concert goers were using the lot, the operator tried to get auxiliary lighting but it didn't come through, he said. Three security people were sent to the lot and there was no debris or damage reported.

The charge of $3 is usual at that lot, which often has served as overflow parking for civic center events. Parking is $2 at the civic center, but it fills up fast.

The operator leases the lot from the Virginia Tech Foundation, which owns the hotel grounds.

Who gets flu shots?

Q: Exactly who should take the A Beijing flu vaccine? N.N.

A: Those who are 65 and older, or have chronic illnesses, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health-care workers who come into contact with patients also should get the shot.

Chronic illnesses such as diabetes and diseases of the heart, lungs or immune system put flu victims at high risk of serious complications, according to the CDC.

Dedicated ice skaters

Q: A number of people are interested in ice skating in Roanoke. Is the civic center or LancerLot going to support this interest? S.S., Roanoke

A: You're right, some folks are REALLY interested in skating - enough to do it in the wee hours of the morning.

Six organizations - four of them amateur hockey leagues - have scheduled almost every hour of ice time available at the Roanoke Civic Center, Assistant Manager Mark Collins said.

Some days the action starts at 5 a.m. and concludes at 3 a.m.

Public skating will be offered outdoors at LancerLot in Vinton, owner Henry Brabham said.

He's ordered a blanket-type cover for the ice and hopes to open by Nov. 1 if the cover arrives. There will be skating Friday and Saturday nights and maybe Sunday afternoons when the weather's agreeable, Brabham said.

LancerLot's ice rink remained intact after the roof collapsed in March's blizzard.
