WHAT TO DO IF YOU FIND A WOUNDED ANIMAL

If you find an injured or orphaned animal:

Do not touch it or pick it up. Like you, animals are taught not to go with strangers and it may bite you. Get a parent or other adult to help you with the rescue.

Call for assistance right away. Put Roanoke Wildlife Rescue's phone number in your phone book. The best way to help an animal is to bring it to a trained wildlife specialist. They will even come and pick it up. It is illegal to keep wildlife as pets.

Do not rescue skunks or raccoons. They are the top carriers of rabies.

Do not feed the animal. Improper food can kill it; cold food or drink can cause pneumonia.

Keep animals warm until you get them to help.

If an orphan is uninjured, put it back where you found it. It is not true that a mother will abandon an animal that has been touched by humans.
