APPLE BUTTER NEVER MADE IT TO PROGRAM'S SALE

An apple-butter sale set for last Saturday by New River Community Action's weatherization program went a little too well: All 60 quarts of apple butter the group's volunteers made last Friday were sold before the scheduled roadside sale Saturday in Riner, the weatherization program's director, Billy Weitzenfeld, said Monday.

"I feel a little bad," he said, explaining that the apple-butter yield was less than they had anticipated, and demand was so high people were buying almost as soon as it could be made.

The weatherization program fixes faulty or dangerous heating systems and improves home insulation and weather-stripping to reduce energy costs for low-income homeowners. It took on the extra-curricular fund-raiser in the wake of state and federal funding cutbacks, as part of an effort to keep itself afloat through the rest of the fiscal year.

Weitzenfeld apologized for any inconvenience, and said the program would like to make much more apple butter next time.

The program also will pick the winner of a handmade quilt this week.
