STATE'S LATEST VENTURE IS SEEDLINGS BY MAIL

The Virginia Department of Forestry soon will become a mail-order retailer.

The department is issuing a catalog of seedlings grown at the state's three nurseries.

People in the state's urban areas are showing increased interest in planting trees, said Eleanor Whinnery, marketing coordinator for the department in Charlottesville.

The catalogs and informational pamphlets are to be delivered this week to foresters in each of the state's counties.

The catalog offers about 50 varieties, including the common apple tree, dogwood, locust, maple, oak, paulownia, pine, spruce and witch-hazel.

Buyers must order a minimum of 25 seedlings. The price varies from $22 to $50 per 25-seedling order. - Associated Press
