VAUGHT AWAITS WORD ON FUTURE

The Tazewell County school board took no action Monday in a protest by a Richlands woman alleging that Dennis Vaught, former Patrick Henry High School football coach, had been abusive to her son during an in-school suspension.

Charlotte Culbertson said Vaught had grabbed her son, Bobby, and pushed him up against a stairwell while making abusive remarks Sept. 23.

Ben Sussman, a Tazewell County school board member, said the board set up an "improvement plan" for Vaught to follow. The principal of Tazewell Middle School, where Vaught teaches, and schools superintendent Woodrow Mullin agreed on the plan, Sussman said.

The board also will appeal to the Virginia High School League executive committee, which meets next week, to lift the probation barring Richlands from the football playoffs because the Blue Tornadoes' illegal cleats last year against Salem in a Group AA playoff game.
